Looking back: Up and down Briggate

I took these two photographs of Briggate in Brighouse back in the 1960s.

The first was taken from the Commercial Street end of Briggate, somewhere near to where the entrance to Wellington Arcade is today. The second was taken from Thornton Square and looks north. The Town Hall building and former bank building in Thornton Square are still there of course, as are the shops at the respective ends of Commercial Street and Bethel Street.

Most of the little shops that lined Briggate itself are long gone, and indeed, some of the new shops that replaced them in the 1970s are today standing empty. Briggate remains, however, still busily populated by shoppers and cars, still at the centre of a busy little town.
